Wind chill ain’t brill – so says Celtman & Highland Warrior winner Graeme Stewart

In the last post a few auld timers discussed warming up before going in the cold water. Well the thing is, once you’re out the water the cold will really begin to bite. As you can see from the 2 charts below the air temperature is predicted to be 7c with gusting westerly winds in excess of 30mph. That’s going to be quite a headwind on the Haul Rd.

Checking the weather forecast it looks like the air temp may be below the water temp, in the single figures, which is especially punishing. The most likely time to get hypothermic is in the first 10k of the bike if you go out wet.

Typically for warmer or short races you will not have a problem wearing race kit below your wetsuit. For cold and wet conditions that is not advisable.

Where the temperature is very low below 10oC or duration is longer, avoiding hypothermia is the main priority.

DO NOT wear your cycling/triathlon kit below your wetsuit, wear something else e.g. trunks, technical T-shirt, surfing rash top.

DO keep your cycle/triathlon kit dry and warm in T1 and get properly dry before heading out on the bike. Hand or foot warmer in shoes and gloves can help get the blood flowing back to the feet and hands.*

You wouldn’t go out the house for a mid winter bike ride wet and only wearing a tri suit. Why do so on a cold, wet and windy race. Make sure you wrap up with a good wind proof jacket and gloves.

Remember the swim is just the first part of a much longer race and it will not be much fun if you get too cold.

* Graeme’s recommendation about hand / feet warmers is a great one. We already have on order Little Hotties hand and feet warmers for all Middle Distance athletes. You will get these at T1. Simply place them in your socks at the back of your heel and either in your glove under your wrist or the cuff of your sleeve. The heat will the radiate through to your blood as it heads towards your feet and hands. DO NOT place them in your shoe or palm of your hand. The constant pressure will make them less effective.

Over the past week lots and lots of you have be chatting on social media about how to cope with the cold water in Loch Lomond. So I have asked 3 stalwarts of the Scottish Triathlon scene to give you their advice.

Stuart Macleod is a bit of an extreme / endurance mentalist. A lover of all things Swim Run and cold. Alongside the wonderfully gobby Alan Cardwell, last year he completed the Celtman course on the WINTER Solstice. See the video below.

If you have ever done Ayrodynamic’s OW race at Doonfoot you will have seen Stewart Bailey crawling along the river bed setting the lane ropes out. His latest quest is to swim a mile in Scotland’s 104 largest lochs – The man has invented Lochbagging!!!

But before all that… The water temperature yesterday hit 12c late afternoon. It is looking more and more likely that we will get a swim in excess of 1km. We are fully aware that most of you have not had many opportunities to for open water swims this year, so no matter what the temperature, you will be allowed neoprene gloves, socks and hat. Compulsory if it somehow drops below 11c.

Also there has been some rumour of people talking about not doing the swim at all, but taking the slowest swim time + 2mins penalty. Any one who does not complete the swim under their own power (e.g. gets pulled out by safety crew) will get an adjusted time, but you will not get an official placing.

Preparation:

Swimming in cold water requires you to adapt the body to getting used to colder water and air temperatures. The adaptation process should be done well in advance of the event. You will soon become physically and mentally ready for the colder temperatures.

On the day:

Raising the core temperature ahead of a cold water swim can help. To do this I sometimes like to run immediately before the swim. The most challenging part of cold water swimming is often that first few seconds in the water, after which your body adjusts and it becomes easier. I typically use a neoprene vest under my wetsuit in additional to a neoprene cap for insulation. It’s essential to ensure you keep yourself warm.

Ready for a Cold Water Race?

Don’t panic, use “Stewarty Boy’s five point plan”

You have an open water race and the predicted water temperature is less than cold. On social media, you read chat about how cold the water is going to be and how bad it will be. You may have entered a world of negativity.

You could say something like “no worries” and think positive. Alternatively, you could opt to concentrate on the immediate task and act positive. Being prepared, warming up and staying warm.

How we approach a race is individual, my favoured approach faced with an open water race where water temperatures are cold or even less than cold, is always the same. You can call it “Stewarty Boy’s five point plan”. Warm up, wetsuit on, stay warm, warm up, stay dry, smile and rock n roll.

Here it is in more detail.

[1] Warm Up: Start with some dynamic stretching, about five minutes. If you are not sure about dynamic stretching, fake it. If you have seen swimmers rotating their arms in different ways on poolside, just imitate. That will get the job done.

Then it is time to go for an easy run, 10-15 minutes. Make sure you are wearing plenty of clothes, it’s important not to get cold. In fact, at this point it would be good to be too hot. You could include three to five sprints, no more than 10 seconds hard effort, followed by an easy jog back for recovery.

[2] Wetsuit On: Without allowing yourself to cool down get your wetsuit on, no “faffing”.

[3] Stay Warm: If conditions are cold, windy or you may be hanging around for a while, put an old jumper, hoodie or coat and an old pair of socks. Especially old clothes you plan to throw away, you can walk to the water’s edge wearing them.

[4] More Warm Up: Once you have, your wetsuit on you can continue with some more dynamic stretching, use swim cords if you have them, a short run or even some star jumps. Apart from warming up, if these activities build up a layer of sweat in your wetsuit you are going to be a lot more comfortable when you immerse yourself in the water.

[5] Stay Dry: Do not get into the water until you need to. If it is a beach or pontoon start, wet you face before the start, nothing else. If it is a deep-water start, hang back so that you get to the start line just in time.

Now, this does not all happen by magic. You will have had to bring all the kit you need to warm up and stay warm. You will also need to have set aside enough time. I make that 25-30 minutes. Do not forget you might also have a race briefing. So check the race details, make a plan, and maybe you will update that social media, “I’m feeling good about this” #triathlon #awesome.

COLD WATER WARM UP / PREPARATION

The following is a guide to help participants deal as best possible with cold water conditions for swimming.

 KIT:

Your wetsuit should fit well – baggy wetsuits fill with cold water and don’t work at all!!  V tight wetsuits don’t allow water to enter and so are also cold.  If wearing hats, cloves or socks / booties try to ensure that these fit well also.  Socks / booties should be placed underneath the leg of your wetsuit or they will probably drag and continually fill with cold water!!  Wearing a couple of silicon swim hats or hats on top of a neoprene swim hat is the best option.

 COLD WATER FAMILIARISATION:

Entering cold water can be a real shock physically and mentally – practice in advance at a coached session if possible.  If that’s not possible practice cold water immersion in a shower or bath or even just placing your face into a bowl of iced water – it will familiarise you with the physical and emotional response and allow you to remain calmer.

WARM UP:

Your wetsuit works by allowing a small layer of water to enter the suit and your body temperature warming it.  DO NOT BE COLD GETTING INTO THE WATER!!  If you are cold, shivering and have cold skin entering the water you are liable to not warm up!!  Stay warm whilst getting into your wetsuit – do this after a small jog with plenty of clothes on to ensure you are warm before you start.  Keep warm socks and gloves on as you get into your suit.  When in the suit keep a hat and gloves and trainers on if possible to stay warm – a waterproof jacket on top of the wetsuit helps also if exposed to cold air or wind.  KEEP MOVING.  Do a land based warm up with press ups, butterfly arm circles, calf raises and squats etc. to stay warm.  Keep an eye on the clock for your start time – don’t be late but don’t be ages early hanging around getting cold.

 WATER ENTRY:

Don’t rush but definetely don’t wait!!  The slower you do this the greater the chance of getting cold.  But a swan dive into cold water is likely to be a huge physical shock!!!   Try to enter the water smoothly and calmly without stopping and swim soon after entering.  Walk till thigh deep then gently squat down and put face in the water.  Progress to a few strokes of breastroke, putting your face in the water a few times.  Stop and gather your thoughts and ensure you are controlling your breathing.  Then attempt to swim!!  Remember that physical activity produces heat from the working muscles.  If you don’t swim you will get cold quickly!!!  If racing try to time water entry so it’s done 3-4 mins before the start so that any initial breathlessness is past before you start.  At all times concentrate on maintaining smooth rhythmical breathing and maintaining physical effort.

Always be familiar with the event’s safety policy / advice – if you need assistance roll onto your back and lift an arm in the air.

Finally the weather.

It is looking like a windy day with a wee bit of rain.

With the predicted westerly winds it is likely that there will be strong cross winds on the fast descents of the Haul Rd. Deep sectioned wheels are not advised.

Athlete Notes for LOCH loMAN Middle, Standard & Sprint Distance Triathlons

Sunday 17th May 2015

First of all, thank you for entering this debut event and thank you for your understanding about the issues concerning the water temperature and the swim. More about that later.

RACE HQ, START, TRANSITION & FINISH

Loch Lomond Shores, Overspill Car Park, Ben Lomond Way, Balloch, G83 8QL

Car Parking.

You can park your car in the overspill car park next to transition. LAST ENTRY is 6.45am

Marshals will strictly control exit. This may not be until all cyclists have returned. Approx 1pm

Toilets and changing.

Transition will have toilets and heated change marquees. These will be accessible to athletes and event staff only.

Registration will be on Sunday 17th May 2015

Middle and Standard Distance athletes

5.00am – 6.30am

Sprint Distance athletes

5.30am – 7.00am

You will be given the following:

1-Numbered colour coded swim hat

2-Numbered timing chip

3-Race Number (body / tribelt)

4-Race Number (helmet)

5-Race Number (seat post)

6-Race Number (bike front)

Please ensure all numbers match.

You will also have a number body marked.

We will supply safety pins.

 Transition

Access to Transition is for athletes only.

Helmets must be worn when walking through transition with cycle.

Only store race equipment at transition. Any other kit bags etc can be left in change marquee. You will have access to marquees during T1 & T2. The marquees will be heated.

Cycle security. Your race number and cycle number must match or no exit from transition.

Timing

Finishline are providing electronic timing.

Please ensure you have been body marked on your right upper arm and left lower leg.

Please ensure you show your race number to the rear on cycle and to the front on the run.

If in doubt at timing areas please shout out your number to the marshal.

Marshal Briefing

Marshal Briefing will take place near transition at 6.20am

Race Briefing

Race Briefing will take place on the beach at 6.30am for Middle & Standard and 7.45am for Sprint.

Race Start – Middle 7.00am –  Standard 7.45am –  Sprint 8.15am

Race start will be in chest deep water immediately off beach opposite Jenners.

Drumkinnon beach is not a fine sandy beach. It has small pebbles and stones. Neoprene socks are advised – compulsory if water temp below 11c

Swim Course – 1.9km Middle, 1.5km Standard, 750m Sprint

Wetsuits are compulsory. Race numbered swim cap (provided) is compulsory. Neoprene socks, hats and gloves compulsory if water is below 11c. Strongly advised if above 11c.

The basic swim course will be an anticlockwise triangle first heading towards Cameron House pier, then back towards the wee beach and then towards Maid of The Loch, before returning into the lagoon via the Green and Red channel markers and onto Drumkinnon Beach.

The actual length of the swim is currently up in the air. Assuming water temperatures do not rise much then they will all be 500m. If this is the case then we will split each distance into 2 waves 15/20 minutes apart.

Everyone is encouraged to complete the swim, however you will be escorted to the shore by kayak / powered craft.

If you get into difficulties please float on your back and raise 1 arm in the air. Our water safety team will come to assist you.

If the water temperature is below 11c and you cannot  complete the swim, you can still complete the bike and run. You will be given the swim time of the slowest swimmer plus 2 minutes.

Swim – Transition 1

Upon exiting the water you will run round the lagoon, past the children’s play area and cross the road at marshaled crossing. Turn right towards the r/about and follow the path into transition. It is approx 300m.

Marshals do not have the power to, nor will attempt to, stop traffic. You must adhere to any Marshals crossing instructions. Failure to do so may result in a DQ.

During transition set up you have have carefully and tidily placed your kit beside your bike. If the weather is wet we will allow you to store your clothing in a poly bag beside your cycle. We strongly advise you pack a towel to help you dry off and cover your bits.

At transition athletes will be able to grab their kit bag and use the heated marquees to change / warm up.

NUDITY IS NOT ALLOWED IN TRANSITION – EVEN IN THE HEATED MARQUEES !!!

You must keep your kit tidy at all times.

You must not remove your cycle from the rack until you have correctly fastened your helmet to your head.

You must not mount your cycle before the mount / dismount line just past the gate.

Make sure you are fully aware of BTF race rules. Our TS race officials will be keeping a beady eye for transgressions.

Cycle 

EU approved cycle helmet is compulsory.

In case of emergency, mobile phone is strongly advised.

The bike course will be Marshalled by motorbikes, mobile cycle mechanic and static marshals at the main junctions.

If you see a fellow competitor in physical or medical trouble please assist and inform the next marshal.

Drafting – don’t do it. We have a motorcycle referee who will be on the look out for those breaking the BTF rules.

Turning left out of T1 you must not mount your bike until the Mount Line. Marshals will be on hand to show you exactly where it is.

The roads range in terrain from wide, flat, well tarmac’ed stretches with great sight lines along the A82 and Haul Rd, to lumpy, poorly surfaced tarmac with blind corners and blind summits on the Old Glen Fruin Road.

The A82 can be a very busy road. Police Scotland are providing us with a minimum of four officers along its length. If they tell you to stop you MUST stop. Failure to comply with their instruction will not only result in a DQ but will probably lead to prosecution. That said they are there to help aid the traffic flow and your progress, particularly at the large Stoneymollen Roundabout.

Only the Police have the power to manage traffic. Our Marshal team can only advise you of dangers and point you the correct way.

The route will be well marked, but ultimately it is your responsibility to know the way

The A82 is frequently used by buses and lorries. Take care. 

PLEASE TAKE GREAT CAUTION THROUGHOUT but especially in all residential areas and narrow descents.

Be aware of other cyclists, pedestrians and animals on the road throughout the course.

The route will be signed with direction arrows and caution signs.

The use of earphones, ipods etc is strictly forbidden and will result in an immediate DQ.

Sprint, Standard & Middle Distance Cycle Route

Beside transition there will be an aid station with water, gels and premixed powered drinks.

The run course is predominately on foot paths and bike paths.

Being a typical sunday in Balloch there will be dog walkers, prams, kids, old folk all wandering around in a carefree and unpredictable manner.

It has been a busy few days.

Police Scotland have advised that they will be dedicating a minimum of 4 traffic officers to the event. Their main role will be to control traffic flow at A82 Stoneymollen Roundabout, Arden Roundabout and A82 Haul Rd junction. If they tell you to stop YOU STOP. Remember you must always adhere to the Highway Code and officers instructions.

I am delighted to confirm that the swim location, transition and finish has now been moved to Loch Lomond Shores. A massive thanks to Clare from Loch Lomond Shores, Mark from Loch Lomond Boat Hire and their teams for facilitating this move.

Why the move?  – Simples. The 30cm deep water temperature at Balloch is almost 2c higher than up at Duck Bay. Additionally we have more emergency removal points for the water safety team to utilise if required.

The swim will start and finish on the beach opposite Jenners. This is the same place the Great Scottish Swim exits.

You will have a 300m run from the beach to Transition. In transition we will have heated marquees for you to change in and get warm and dry before heading off on the bike.

Triathlon Scotland have confirmed sanctioning for the event at its new location. The event’s Triathlon Scotland Technical Official will be the person who ultimately decides how long the swims will be. Like the water safety crew he is a local who knows the waters well. So fingers crossed the sun shines a bit more and raises the water temperature.
