Following the disappointing news that Nova will not be holding the Great Scottish Swim in 2019 Loch Lomond Shores have agreed to allow Loch loMAN Triathlons to swap dates from May to Sunday 25th August 2019.
This means an end to racing in extreme cold cold water. Hopefully.
But it also means that we can expand the event to include swim only races.
We plan to have 400m, 750m, 1500m and possibly 3000m swims alongside the usual Sprint, Standard and Middle Distance Triathlons.
The triathlons will be the main focus of the day, so we will not be having the 2500+ swimmers GSS could accommodate. Numbers will likely be limited to 100 per distance.
Below are the race numbers for this Sunday’s LOCH loMAN triathlons.
To help speed up registration please check your number here and remember it.
Registration
Saturday noon – 6pm for Middle, Standard & Sprint Athletes
Saturday & also Sunday 6.50am – 7.30am for Sprint Atheletes
Triathlon Scotland Members – Bring your race license. If you entered as a BTF / TS member (got discount!) but bring no license you will get charged an extra £7 cash for a day levy.
Non Triathlon Scotland Members – Bring PHOTO ID. You have already paid extra for day levy so just your driving license will do.
MIDDLE DISTANCE RACE – 7am start

You will also have your number body marked on Sunday.
We will supply safety pins.

We are tweaking the layout of transition this year. Site meeting is next week. We’ll update you soon.
Access to Transition is for athletes only.
Helmets must be worn when walking through transition with cycle.
Only store race equipment at transition. Any other kit bags etc can be left in change marquee. You will have access to marquees during T1 & T2. The marquees will be heated.

Please ensure you show your race number to the rear on cycle and to the front on the run.
If in doubt at timing areas please shout out your number to the marshal.
Marshal Briefing
Marshal Briefing will take place near transition at 6.20am
Race Briefings
Race Briefing will take place on the beach at the following times.
Wetsuits are compulsory… Due to predicted water and air temperatures, to allow for full distance swims Neoprene socks, hats and gloves are strongly advised. If water temperature is below 12c these items will be compulsory
The basic swim course will be an anticlockwise triangle first heading towards Cameron House pier, then back towards the wee beach and then towards Maid of The Loch, before returning into the lagoon via the Green and Red channel markers and onto Drumkinnon Beach.
Everyone is encouraged to complete the swim, however you will be escorted to the shore by kayak / powered craft.
If you get into difficulties please float on your back and raise 1 arm in the air. Our water safety team will come to assist you.
If the water temperature is below 11c and you cannot complete the swim, you can still complete the bike and run. You will be given the swim time of the slowest swimmer plus 2 minutes.
Swim – Transition 1
Upon exiting the water you will run round the lagoon, past the children’s play area and cross the road at marshalled crossing. Turn right towards the r/about and follow the path into transition. It is approx 300m.
Marshals do not have the power to, nor will attempt to, stop traffic. You must adhere to any Marshals crossing instructions. Failure to do so may result in a DQ.
During transition set up you have have carefully and tidily placed your kit beside your bike. If the weather is wet we will allow you to store your clothing in a poly bag beside your cycle or a small kit bag in the change marquee. We strongly advise you pack a towel to help you dry off and cover your bits.
At transition athletes will be able to grab their kit bag and use the heated marquees to change / warm up.
NUDITY IS NOT ALLOWED IN TRANSITION – EVEN IN THE HEATED MARQUEES !!!
You must keep your kit tidy at all times.
You must not remove your cycle from the rack until you have correctly fastened your helmet to your head.
You must not mount your cycle before the mount / dismount line just past the gate.
Make sure you are fully aware of BTF race rules. Our TS race officials will be keeping a beady eye for transgressions.
Cycle
EU approved cycle helmet is compulsory.
In case of emergency, mobile phone is strongly advised.
The bike course will be Marshalled by motorbikes, mobile cycle mechanic and static marshals at the main junctions.
If you see a fellow competitor in physical or medical trouble please assist and inform the next marshal.
Drafting – don’t do it. Following feedback from recent “draftfests” we have two motorcycle referees who will be on the look out for those breaking the BTF rules.
Turning left out of T1 you must not mount your bike until the Mount Line. Marshals will be on hand to show you exactly where it is.
The roads range in terrain from wide, flat, well tarmac’ed stretches with great sight lines along the A82 and Haul Rd, to lumpy, narrow, newly resurfaced tarmac with blind corners and blind summits on the Old Glen Fruin Road.
The A82 can be a very busy road. Police Scotland are once again providing us with four officers along its length. If they tell you to stop you MUST stop. Failure to comply with their instruction will not only result in a DQ but will probably lead to prosecution. That said they are there to help aid the traffic flow and your progress, particularly at the large Stoneymollen Roundabout.
Only the Police have the power to manage traffic. Our Marshal team can only advise you of dangers and point you the correct way.
The route will be well marked, but ultimately it is your responsibility to know the way
The A82 is frequently used by buses and lorries. Take care.
PLEASE TAKE GREAT CAUTION THROUGHOUT but especially in all residential areas and narrow descents.
Be aware of other cyclists, pedestrians and animals on the road throughout the course.
The route will be signed with direction arrows and caution signs.
The use of earphones, ipods etc is strictly forbidden and will result in an immediate DQ.

Full details coming soon about our new SwimRun UK Scottish Triathlon Series; featuring LOCH loMAN, ArranMan, MunroMan / River Spey and an iconic new race venue. Exciting times.
A massive thank you to everyone who raced today, even more so to the 60+ marshals and safety staff who got out of their beds at 4am to facilitate today’s racing.
A fantastically enjoyable day it turned out to be, sadly, without taking away from the eventual victories of those who crossed the line first, due to a lapse of judgement by me, and an unfortunate coincidence of another event using the exact same signage on part of our route, two athletes who were minutes ahead in their respective races were denied the victories they probably deserved.
First the unfortunate coincidence – The Polaroid 10K team decided to do dummy run of their route today. It part uses the riverbank path but turns off it after the weir. Our run signage was put up very late last night and the run course ridden and checked whilst you were all out on the bike. In between that check and the first runners going on course, the conflicting signage went up and until his was realised several runners went massively in the wrong direction.
Trying to correct that error I created the lapse of judge for which I hold up my hands and say sorry – not just to those who were denied victory, but the several others who ran a km or so extra.
Trying to correct that error I had to reallocate marshals as we zoomed about trying to suss out WTF was going on.
Thinking that I had adequately spray marked the turn points I decided that from a safety point of view those at the two run turn points were the least required and that it was better to keep in place those marshals at road crossings.
I like to think I am overly diligent when it comes to athlete notes, signing the route and spray marking hazards on the road. I go through a lot of orange paint.
I genuinely thought that the Turn Point markings and the emphasis on their location during the race brief would have been sufficient. Sadly not. I have never “raced” triathlon. I have never tried to get a PB. I have simply enjoyed completing triathlons, so I’ve never had my head in that blurry pointy end of race zone.
It’s fucking infuriating – both for those athletes and me as an event organiser – that what turned out to be a brilliant swim, an awesome cycle and a 95% great run can be ruined in such circumstances.
Sorry, lesson well and truly learned… no matter how much signage or pre information you provide triathletes need lots more run marshals.
I hope you are not too sunburnt and your feet are up enjoining a nice relaxing evening. Me I’m off for a bath and glass of wine then almost instant sleep because the race team didn’t get any last night thanks to the horrible music of the Lomond Park Hotel.
Sorry & Awrabest
Alan
p.s. Times will go online tomorrow
p.p.s T-Shirts (i will give them out at rego next time) however for those of you who purchased Tshirts with your entry but missed out today, I will do another print. It will take about 3 weeks. I will send an email out tomorrow
If you snaffled yourself a free TShirt by error – well done. wink emoticon
As you can see it is going to be a very wet few days leading up to LOCH loMAN 2016.
Just to reiterate, although the water temperature peaked at 13c (some say 14c) over the weekend, the forecast rain will drop the loch’s temp down to approx 11c or 12c. To make sure athletes get to race with full distance swims neoprene gloves, hat and boots are compulsory for Standard and Middle distance athletes.
We want to make sure you enjoy your swim… but more importantly your bodies and brains are in a warm enough state to go out on the bike course.
Thankfully the wind is forecast to be light, but there will also be rain showers. Much of the course is on high exposed roads so please make sure you get your layering correct for the bike.
The run course is much more sheltered and should make for a pleasant jog.
Should you forget any kit, like gloves or goggles the guys from LOMO will be on site Sunday morning before the start of the race to sell you some. Don’t rely on not getting your stuff until then, hoping they have enough stock though. This is for emergency purchases only.
I accidentally drowned my macbook over the weekend. Full updated 2016 athlete notes will be emailed tomorrow or Wednesday when it is returned from Apple shop.
Not much has changed, except a difference to the run course due to ongoing building works at the Cameron House gate house.
The water is currently sitting at 12c. There is a fair bit of rain forecast over the next few days. With our rule exemption for mandatory boots, gloves and hats we are 99.9% certain of having full distance swims.
Please check your name is on the below list. If it is and you previously asked to defer please email alan@hahacomedy.co.uk ASAP
